Team changes

  • Williamson Dynamics had been a fading force in 2011 and after a notable absence in the closing stages of the season, the team formally withdrew from the Superleague at the end of the 2011 season.
  • Computrac Motorsports were rebranded as Red 5 Racing for 2012 following Gavin Thomas's takeover of the team half way through the previous season. This marked a full circle for the team which had originally started as Red 5 at the beginning of the 2010 season.

New entries

The number of teams was expanded to 13, meaning that 2 new constructors were able to join the Superleague in 2012 and both came from existing Supercup outfits.

  • Cornish team Kernow Sport were the first to be assigned a place on the Superleague grid much to the delight of team owner Mark Wicks. Kernow had been an established name in the Masters Series and Supercup competitions and announced a strong starting lineup with Masters Champion Simon Cattell partnering veteran Wicks.
  • The 2nd team to be accepted was the German outfit Green Stripes, who had previously run in other GPVWC competitions under the names 'CP Lotus' and 'Force Lotus'. Led by Christoph Lichtenstein, they announced a lineup consisting of Lichtenstein himself, Matt Clipp and most impressively Dave Carr-Smith as test driver.

Calendar changes

  • The calendar has been reduced to just 18 Grand Prix for 2012 - 2 less than the previous season. This was allow races to be spaced two weeks apart in order to guarantee enough time for an increased amount of coverage to the events.

Rule changes

Research & Development

  • A new area was introduced in the R&D system for 2012 - fuel efficiency. As different engines have far different fuel consumption rates, teams would be able to devote some RD energies to improving theirs in an attempt to give their drivers an extra advantage come race day. In addition, fuel efficiency values were made known to managers when bidding for engines - one more factor to keep into account when making a balanced choice.
  • Changes were also made to the development system to allow greater variations in both the cost and pace of development at the discretion of each individual manager in order to make the system much more flexible.

Team Personnel

The biggest new feature of 2012, however, was to be the GPVWC Team Personnel. Teams were able to hire key personnel members before the start of the season - namely the Chief Designer, the Commercial Manager and the Chief Mechanic. Each individual, for whom teams would need to outbid their rivals, possessed hidden statistics relative to his or her quality - statistics that were only partially disclosed to the teams. Each of their abilities have a repercussion on the team's ability to improve certain areas.

  • The Chief Designer improves R&D by decreasing (or increasing!) the number of RD points necessary for any given update, or the time needed to develop it. Each Designer has some strong points and weak points in any of the areas, and will thus influence the way a car is developed.
  • The Commercial Manager is able to lower the marketing requirements needed when seeking sponsors and/or increase the amount of money the latter bring in.
  • The Chief Mechanic influences the speed of the team's pitstops and the likeliness of problems/random delays appearing.

Testing

The 2012 season saw the introduction of a new in-season testing system - tests were reduced in length to two hours and the maximum number of laps was lowered to 40 with each lap yielding more RD points. Furthermore, the number of in-season tests was reduced to just two - one in the early stages of the season and one halfway through it - with more importance given to Free Practice.

Qualifying

For 2012 the 2-phase qualifying system from the previous season had been dropped in favour of a return to a simpler 1 session format. The 2012 qualifying sessions run for just 15 minutes with all drivers able to set as many timed laps as possible. However a limited parc ferme rule is in place and rules on the use of the escape key have been tightened.
