The 2016 Vintage Series season was the inaugural season of its kind at the GPVWC. It was ended after just 3 rounds having been judged to have served its purpose.

Premise

At the 2015 GPVWC Day, it was announced a new series titled would run in 2016. It would be run using rFactor as an aside to the league's excursions on rFactor 2 and would feature retro Formula 1 cars. The series was set up for the benefit of GPVWC members unable to make the switch to rFactor 2.

It was announced in February 2016 that Stormcharge would be the sponsor of all Vintage Series events in the 2016 season, as a continuation of their partnership with the GPVWC.

Demise

Participation in the first round was fairly strong; however numbers declined throughout the season. The GPVWC Management ruled that the series had served its intended purpose as a stopgap series for those unable to make the switch to rFactor 2, and the series was brought to a premature halt after the third round at Magny-Cours, effectively crowning Sandeep Chodha the Drivers' Champion.

Teams and drivers

It was announced that no official teams would enter the 2016 championship; instead, the drivers would be assigned to the cars that competed in the 1991 Formula 1 World Championship. However, the cars would all be equalised in performance.
