Supercup ---> Supercup Grand Prix

Are they Grands Prix? I struggled with that for ages! lol There are probably a few other page naming problems we should try to sort out. --Mal mckee 14:11, 1 June 2011 (UTC)

Well I considered them Grand Prix, but initally I followed your lead with the xxx Supercup thing. However got told to change it by a certain influential Italian type lol. Chris williamson 15:22, 1 June 2011 (UTC)
Ah, we need more information from that fella! You hold him down on that chair, and I'll plug in the spotlight!
Nice work on the redirects for the teams by the way... another of the list of jobs I had considered doing. If we keep chipping away at it like this, we'll be making good progress. :)
Edit: Although yes - some of us are indeed aware of the Italia.. Spani.. Barcelona Job that needs doing! :P

Juha's VWC+Wiki archive

I don't know if you've already worked this out from the edits I made to the 2006 Supercup season page, but I actually found the archive on the Wayback Machine for the old wiki!! We could possibly use a lot of it to fill out this one. I think it was created in 2006/2007, so obviously 2007 to the present is going to be missing. The format and style we've been using here is also slightly different. On the plus side, it might be possible to get some of the functional templates working, if we can access the source for them.

I couldn't access the wiki source code for the 2006 Supercup season page, so I had to use a program called Firebug, which works for Firefox (thanks to Luke for alerting me to it a while ago), and copy the HTML code instead. After that, there's still a lot of work to be done... BUT, it's much less work than having to input all the data itself. For that, I use Find/Replace in Notepad++ (thanks again to Luke!).

Anyway, I managed to get the source for Ryan McConkey's old page and merged it with the skeleton article we already have on him. So here's a couple of Wayback Machine links for you:

--Mal mckee 22:13, 13 June 2011 (UTC)

Good work there Mal! Just a shame that it seems to be rather patchy on what it's recorded and what it hasn't (although still better than nothing!) --Chris williamson 00:01, 14 June 2011 (UTC)
Actually I just found a list of all the pages Wayback Machine has saved here --Chris williamson 00:12, 14 June 2011 (UTC)
Good find. Not much there really, but not too bad - we got a couple of drivers, the 2007 SL season, a Supercup race and a couple of teams. Here's a list of the ones I managed to copy over. Oh, and one of my old helmets was there too! --Mal mckee 02:15, 14 June 2011 (UTC)

Race results tables

I've started going through the 2011 race reports adding results tables based on the style Mal's used on the 2002 Brazilian Grand Prix page. For this I've setup an excel sheet to convert the results table from the main site into formatted wiki tables in order to save time - if anyone wants a copy of the sheet just let me know. --Chris williamson 00:05, 14 June 2011 (UTC)

Nice one! Yes please! :) --Mal mckee 00:06, 14 June 2011 (UTC)
Job's a goodun' mate. I'll start using it when I boot into Vista (on which I have Office). Thanks. :) --Mal mckee 23:19, 14 June 2011 (UTC)

SC teams vs. SL teams vs. Masters etc

Before we get to adding many more of them, perhaps now is the time to come up with a way of separating the teams in categories for each competition (some teams have only ever competed in the SC or in the SL.. and not the other) and also figure out how to present the team names versus the parent companies (Contructors' names).

I had tried this with the most complex team in the GPVWC, which was Stealth. Those pages survived from the old wiki more or less intact.

As you can see - there was an umbrella organisation - Stealth International, then there was Stealth Grand Prix, which headed up the two teams: Stealth F1 (SL) and Stealth F2 (SC).

Most organisations will probably be the Constructor and one or two teams - like Synergetic Motorsports and Synergetic F1 and Synergetic F2.

So should we have the category Category:Supercup teams and also Category:Superleague teams as well as the more general category, Category:Constructors? --Mal mckee 12:27, 14 June 2011 (UTC)

It's not an easy one to deal with really, but I think Category:Supercup teams and also Category:Superleague teams as well as the more general category, Category:Constructors would be the way to do it too.
I'm thinking the constructors page would be just a general page (eg Nijo Racing) giving an outline of their involvement across various GPVWC series with links to the sub-teams in each series and a basic info box. Then the sub-teams pages would be effectively that organization's activities within each series (eg Nijo Racing (SL), Nijo Racing (SC), Nijo Racing (Masters).) and accompanied by the existing SL/SC team info boxes and maybe some stats. The only problem would how to deal with Umbrella organizations like Stealth International (additional category for these?). Is that pretty much what you had in mind?
The other issue would be the naming conventions. While the older series/teams fit well with the F1/F2 distinction it seems a little strange when talking about more recent series/teams where the distinction is much more SL/SC. Maybe the best way would be to adopt the former system for F1VWC related events and the latter for new-style GPVWC related events.
On a related note how do you think teams that rename or are taken over should be treated? (eg Yellowbirds/Computrac, D.O.R/Red Archer, Williamson Dynamics/European Williamson Dynamics etc) --Chris williamson 13:11, 14 June 2011 (UTC)

Yup - this is the kind of thing I have been thinking about. As for naming conventions, many teams who entered what is now known as the Supercup, appended "GP2" or "F2" to their names. RTT had two names... GreenVipers and GreenDragons(?) or something, to distinguish between the "F1" class and the "GP2" class. I just used Synergetic F1 and Synergetic F2.
All we need think about now, as we've got templates for the SL and SC infoboxes (and we have, or will have, a Masters infobox too), are how to distinguish between names of the constructors and names for the teams for some. I suppose for my team that'll be "Syn.. Motorsports" with "Syn.. F1" and "Syn.. F2"... as with Stealth (although they went simply by the name "Stealth GP" until 2006 or 2007.. as did others. We will basically have to retroactively rename teams I guess.
For Stealth International (and maybe Dan Prescott International too) maybe a category called "Holding Companies" or something? We should probably get Will in on this one.
As for renaming... I had planned with my own original team 'Down Racing' to just make it a redirect to the more recent name 'Ultima Racing'. A team like Will's EIRE would probably deserve a page of its own. However, as a continuation, its stats and most of the information should also be included on the Nordsjoen page. Again, maybe Will's help with some of them, as we come across them.
Finally, have you any advice for being faster in the SC at Sillystone? I'm doing pretty good times in the SL car, but I'm sucking in the SC car!! --Mal mckee 21:53, 14 June 2011 (UTC)
Ok then so we stick with the naming conventions each team uses unless there's no clear distinction, in which case we'll have to add something to the titles to distinguish them - I can suggest XXX SL, XXX (SL), XXX (Superleague) or XXX (Superleague team) (substitute Supercup/Masters/F1/F2 as applicable). I'll have a go at setting up the Nijo pages in this way now if that's ok.
As for Silverstone, I'm probably slower than you so why are you asking me? :P --Chris williamson 22:35, 14 June 2011 (UTC)
Sounds good mate. Maybe if we just go about it as we are doing, then we will come up with a convention. I think the older teams who participated before with things like "F2" appended to their names, should probably still keep those names. I can't see it being particularly confusing - especially as each team will be in the appropriate category.
The problem might be harder to deal with in the points and stats tables (which wiki page should we pipe-link to for X, Y or Z?) and in coming up with unique names for the constructors. I like (SC), (SL) and (Masters) as disambiguators (is that a word?!), for those teams which haven't already created a unique name for each team in each class. I'll probably remember some of the teams who did use "F2" or "GP2" appended, as we go along. It's easy to make redirects though, if any of us make mistakes, so just carry on.
I'll also come up with a 'constructors template' shortly, unless you want to have a crack at it.
As for my lap times in the SC mate - I've been down at 1:41.3xx ... but just today I don't think I was doing much better than 1:47s per lap! Setups for these cars here is .. well it's escaping me! --Mal mckee 23:16, 14 June 2011 (UTC)
Had a quick go at Nijo - what do you think of Nijo Racing, Nijo Racing (Superleague) and Nijo Racing (Supercup) as the model (page names can always be adjusted later)? I like the fact it gives me chance to have both an SL and SC infobox now - just needs a constructor info box like you said. --Chris williamson 23:23, 14 June 2011 (UTC)

Finding things!

Here you are... GPVWC Historical Wiki:Editing Guide. That's basically the old main page, which you can get to from the new main page by clicking on Editing Guide just under the welcome banner. Let me know how that works for you. Personally I don't use that (old) main page anyway to navigate - I just use the categories at the bottom of the pages. ;) --Mal McKee 22:38, 20 June 2011 (UTC)

Ok that's a little better. Now to get those news sections out of 2007! --Chris williamson 22:48, 20 June 2011 (UTC)

Norway

Hey mate - just wondering what was wrong with the Norwegian flag I'd already added. Just looking at the history on the page, the one I had looks sharper and was one pixel taller. --Mal McKee 02:58, 14 July 2011 (UTC)

It was just the other didn't look quite right to me - something in the pixel blending made the blue come out far too dark in my opinion. As for the size that can be easily remedied if it's bugging you, by hey what's a pixel between friends. ;) --Chris williamson 10:47, 14 July 2011 (UTC)
Here's the original: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Flag_of_Norway.svg I didn't have a problem with the size, but more with the sharpness (compare the three versions http://gpvwc.fedge.me.uk/index.php?title=File:Flag_of_Norway.png). All that being said, if you look at that wikimedia page, the blue does look very dark and the flag is much more square than our flag. Another site: http://www.flags.net/NORW.htm and a photograph of the flag taken in Copenhagen. This one seems to be 'wrong', though I've certainly seen it plenty in the past. --Mal McKee 19:46, 16 July 2011 (UTC)
Well I've done my best to sharpen it up on the latest version and personally I think it is about right. --Chris williamson 20:23, 16 July 2011 (UTC)

PotD

Good call! :) --Mal McKee 02:05, 16 July 2011 (UTC)

Barthelona

The other PC is in use at the minute. If you have sorted any files for me to get to work on though, send them to my e-mail, or list the numbers/filenames. What ever's most handy. --Mal McKee 19:49, 16 July 2011 (UTC)

Meganes

Tell me this, because I've forgotten: the Renault Megane competition was in 2010, yeah? Was it part of the Masters series or a one-off special? --Mal McKee 08:38, 27 July 2011 (UTC)

It was a mini-series during the 2009/10 winter break (I believe it ran just after the Masters). Most of the information is on the old forum: http://gpvwc.freeforums.org/gpvwc-megane-trophy-winter-2009-10-f21.html --Chris williamson 10:10, 27 July 2011 (UTC)
Yeah it was a one off mini-series. Kinda like the Endurance Event is gonna be (accept obviously that will only be one race). The Masters Series is the league's official touring car championship (I think). Maybe we should have a category called something like "Other Competitions" and list the Megane Trophy and the Endurance Event under that. Not sure.--Joe consiglio 13:12, 27 July 2011 (UTC)
Yes - Specials or Special Events or.. Trophy Competitions.. something like that. --Mal McKee 17:16, 27 July 2011 (UTC)

Track records

Jason beat Janne's record narrowly, eh?! Thanks buddy.

I was thinking of extending the table again, possibly to include wet results, or the cars driven etc. If you have any ideas, let me know. --Mal McKee 01:17, 4 August 2011 (UTC)

Hawkeye / HawkEye

Just noticed you moved the HawkEye Racing page to Hawkeye Racing. That extra capital wasn't a typo: in the original records it's marked as HawkEye. Also as HawkEyE. I've noticed Ric's latest logo uses a small 'E's though.

This brings up another question - Vod:Bul and the various other similarly-named teams sometimes have used the colon and sometimes haven't. What to doooo lol! --Mal McKee 08:40, 9 August 2011 (UTC)

I've largely gone along with what Ric's using now which is without the capital 'E' - I put the redirects in so whichever combination is used it should go to right page hopefully.
As for Vod:Bul, the colon a bit of a problem in some areas where it's used as a piece of syntax (e.g. image file names within windows won't allow you to use it.). I suspect it might cause problems in wiki namespaces too, so up to now I've omitted the colon in page and category names. --Chris williamson 10:11, 9 August 2011 (UTC)
No problem. I think it would work, but it certainly has the potential to balls things up, so I agree with you. VodBul for the page, though we should be able to get away with displaying Vod:Bul in tables and in articles etc. I usually stick the ø in for displaying Nordsjøen properly, though the page is "Nordsjoen".
Attempted a reply to your question on my talk page btw. --Mal McKee 12:03, 9 August 2011 (UTC)

Mariano

I can't remember personally, but I thought Mariano was a US citizen. Where did you get Argentinian from and is it possible that he had dual nationality? I saw recently he had sent me a message on Facebook - I really should log in some time! --Mal McKee 23:50, 15 August 2011 (UTC)

I'd got it from this page and to be honest I hadn't given it a second thought. Either that page is inaccurate or there's some kind of dual nationality like you suggest, but I reckon you'd know better than me on this one. --Chris williamson 00:09, 16 August 2011 (UTC)
Ah yes - that definitely looks familiar! He's Argentinian for sure. Though he was listed in the spreadsheet, I think, as USA. The team was definitely Argentinian then - there's enough information there to convince me of that! I'll probably send him a wee message when I log into MyFace, and I'll tell him about the Wiki etc anyway. :)
I sent him a message, though no reply so far.
Will has created GPVWC Day and so we'll need to think up a category for it! I will also be working on the addition of technical and racing guides. I think it will really round the wiki out. Also, if you have any info on other sim-racing leagues, I think we should create at least one page dedicated to our rival leagues - we're all part of the sim-racing community. --Mal McKee 16:07, 24 August 2011 (UTC)

Mariano is 100% argentine - but he does live in the US. NYC if I remember correctly!

Nijo / SC

Bring me up to speed matey - aren't you entering Nijo in the SC this season..? --Mal McKee 13:19, 14 February 2012 (EST)

Not this time Mal - I opted to enter the 2nd team in FC instead. --Chris williamson 07:53, 15 February 2012 (EST)

Woody

Yup - I have that in-progress on my hard drive. Was working on it before I began packing for the USA etc. I have other 2000-era ones done also I think, or nearly done. Gimmie a day or three to find them etc. --Mal McKee 07:46, 19 March 2012 (EDT)
