His debut race was at the Japanese Grand Prix, where he joined ART just a moment before the start of the qualifying. He had won the Supercup Japanese Grand Prix earlier. Koivunen didn't get any test laps with the Superleague car before qualifying session. He qualified on 17th position and retired his debut race on the 3rd lap after crashing out.
His second race of the season was two months later in the Turkish Grand Prix. Once again Koivunen was entrying the event very late, but this time he did drive in the practice session and had 14 laps before qualifying.
