Report
Having completed the American leg of the Masters tour, the European leg kicked off with a trip to the Snetterton circuit in eastern England. This fast and flat circuit saw many close battles and one or two surprises. In qualifying some found it hard going and slipped into the midfield, while championship leader Joe Consiglio once more rose to the occasion and took another pole position. Joining him on the front row was Mark Stanton, with David Jundt and Sam Millar close behind in 3rd and 4th.
The order remained largely the same at the front in the opening lap of the feature race, but a spin from Jason Muscat caused a little bit of drama in the midfield. A few laps later, a braking misjudgement from David Jundt saw him and Sam Millar taking a trip across the grass and both lost time and positions as a result. It also proved to be a bad day for Nick Rowland who suffered several incidents before retiring midrace. The latter stages of the race saw gradual recovery drives for Millar and Jundt, but out in front it was Consiglio who remained cool despite a scare with a backmarker. The Maltese driver won the race and was over 20s ahead of the Constant pairing of Mark and David Stanton at the finishing line.
Due to the reversed grid, the sprint race once again saw lots of action at the start, as the fast drivers jostled to pass the slower drivers ahead. It was Nijo Racing driver Chris Williamson who took the lead initally, but was soon passed by the hard charging Millar, Muscat and Jundt. At the end of the first lap, this battle took a dramatic turn as Millar hooked a wheel on the grass and span, with Muscat spinning in the confusion that followed. As a result Jundt took the lead with teammate Williamson in 2nd. A train of cars quickly formed up behind Williamson and this allowed Jundt to start to build a useful lead over his main rivals. As the race progressed, Consiglio gradually moved up the order and slipped past Millar to take 2nd position. However, he proved to be too far back to challenge Jundt and so the Swiss driver and Nijo Racing were overjoyed to have claimed their first GPVWC win.
