Gavin made his debut in the GPVWC in the Bahrain GP in 2009 driving for Gear F1 alongside serial nemesis Wayne Mullins. Later that season he moved to Maximum Racing and in his first race beat his former team mate in Qualifying. 2010 saw Thomas co-found Red 5 Racing with Mullins, only for the pair to have a dispute about the ability of the car. Mullins moved to arch nemesis Draig Racing, Thomas found a drive with the competitive Synergetic scoring his first point in Japan.
