Intro:

Hello and welcome to follow F1VWC qualifying session live from Monza Italy. Both championships are building up and every session comes more and more important for the top teams and drivers. Mikko Jakonen leads by 14 to Steve Elencevski. Steve has won last two races and FinOz Racing team has been very optimistic about their chances here too. Breaking news before the qualifying session was that EIRE driver Scott Whiteman will not be participating this round and also his participation to the last 3 races after Monza is still unsure so the battle for drivers crown will be between Mikko Jakonen and Steve Elencevski.

A lap of Monza:

?Heading down the start-finish straight, you reach one of the highest speeds on the F1 calendar - in the race the cars are travelling at over 223 mph/360 kph. But the first chicane is first gear and very slow, so the braking is very heavy. The braking point is important and you've really got to concentrate hard to hit it perfectly. When you're arriving at such high speed it's easy to brake either slightly too late or slightly too early. That makes for good racing, and in the race it's a very good place for passing.

?The chicane is very tight but the kerbs are quite flat and you can ride both of them. You exit the corner in first gear and you need good traction because you accelerate up to seventh round the Curva Biassono, taken flat, into the second chicane, the Variante della Roggia. It's quite a bit faster than the first chicane and taken in second gear. The kerbs are much higher and you bounce off them a lot more, so a lot more car control is needed through there. I've seen lots of passing there as well, so it's another possible overtaking spot ? even if it's a bit more difficult than the first chicane.

?From there we reach fourth gear on the way up to the first of the two Lesmo corners. It's taken in third gear at over 112 mph/180 kph. It's quite a long corner, and you need to keep up your speed all the way through. On the exit you need to get on the power early, and you make it up to fourth again before dropping back to third for the second Lesmo. That is taken at similar speed but it's tighter, almost right-angled. It has a short apex and you just clip the apex and let it drift.

?After that you head down the back straight, all the way back up to seventh gear. You go round a left hand kink then down the hill under the old oval circuit before coming up again into braking for the Ascari chicane. Ascari is a great corner - it's fast, taken in third gear and one of my favourite parts of the circuit. You use a bit of the inside kerb on the entry, then you're on full throttle through the right-hand kink and then the left back onto the back straight.

?We make it into seventh gear again for quite some time on the run-up to the last corner, Parabolica. It's not as long as the start-finish straight but depending on the wind, we get up to the same kind of speed as the first chicane. We generally run quite low downforce at Monza, so the main difficulty is that the car's grip is lower and under braking you get a bit more movement than at other circuits.

?Parabolica itself is very fast with a very long exit. So you brake but you keep the speed coming into the corner - which can be taken in third or fourth depending on the gear ratios. You don't drop much below 124 mph/200 kph all the way around and it's hard on the neck because of the lateral G-Force. On exit you get early on the power and you let the car drift as much as possible, coming out of the corner on the very outside as you prepare to start another lap."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(Sector times are allways being compared to the fastest legal lap time.)

Group 1:

(Ryan, Oostende, Buchan, Consiglio, Fawcett)

It's time to start the qualifying session and on the first group we will see Kieran Ryan who is driving the SCUM Holden car this weekend. Then we will see Mapes-VO car driven by team co-owner Peter van Oostende. Martin Buchan will be driving the Whiteman's EIRE car at least he at Monza. Last two in the first group will be Joe Consiglio on Phoenix F1 car and Paul Fawcett driving the Woods Racing car.

Ryan

SCUM

Kieran Ryan starts his flying lap. Hard on the brakes into the first ultra thigh and slow chicane, nicely over the curbs without any problems and accelerates to the 2nd chicane and his sector one time is 28.6 Now through the Lesmo corners and approaching the Ascari chicane. Neatly trough Ascari and S2 time is 56.7. Now into Parabolica where you need to get good exit to the long front straight. Ryan goes over the line and his time is 1:20.855, soon we will see how good it actually was.

Ryan Finish Line 1 Sector 1 28.642

1:20.855 Sector 2 56.781

Oostende

Mapes-VO

Yellow and Black Mapes-VO car goes over the line as Peter van Oostende starts his flying lap. Mapes-VO team has been slightly struggling after their 2nd driver Petri Loukasmäki left the team during after European GP. Co-owner Matt Maple too the place leaving JTM team but then also Maple was forced to miss few races and teams has been in difficult situation to find fast driver to partner Jakonen ever since Loukasmäki left the team. Oostende's first sector was 29.1 and he was nearly half a second down the Ryan's sector time. Now into S2 point and Peter sets time of 57.464 seconds and that's nearly 7 tenths off Ryan's time so looks like SCUM driver will hold the P1. Oostende goes over the line and he goes to 2nd place 1:21.530, he took few thousands of a second back trough Parabolica but was still over 6 tenths slower than Ryan.

Oostende Finish Line 2 Sector 1 29.116 +0.474

1:21.530 +0.675 Sector 2 57.464 +0.683

Buchan

EIRE

3rd car today is Black and Green EIRE driven by Martin Buchan. S1 for Buchan is 29.8 and he is over 1.1 seconds off Ryan's pace after first 2 chicanes and that's quite lot. S2 for Buchan is 58.4 and he is now 1.6 seconds off the pace. Also Oostende was nearly a second quicker through S2 so Buchan will take 3rd place when he crosses the line. 1:22.742 and Buchan goes to 3rd, 1.8 seconds slower than Ryan.

Buchan Finish Line 3 Sector 1 29.809 +1.167

1:22.742 +1.887 Sector 2 58.446 +1.665

Consiglio

Phoenix F1

Joe Consiglio and Phoenix F1 are next up. Phoenix tries to take the advantage over EIRE's lead driver missing and get as many points as possible and maybe be able to catch 3rd placed EIRE on constructor's championship. Gap between the two is 16 points so Phoenix would need 4 points more per race to make it even with EIRE, but then EIRE would still be 3rd as Whiteman has won 5 races this year and Phoenix none. S1 for Consiglio is 28.8 and he is 0.237 seconds down on Ryan's sector time. S2 for Consiglio and he closes the gap down to 0.197 seconds and he sets new sector record for 2nd sector. Still 2 tenths to be gain over last Parabolica corner. It's possible but Ryan was very good through that corner I don't think Consgilio can catch him. And he doesn't? Consiglio takes 2nd place pushing Oostende down one place. Consigilio's time 1:21.254 and he was 0.399 seconds slower than Ryan so he lost nearly 2 tenths on last sector.

Consiglio Finish Line 2 Sector 1 28.879 +0.237

1:21.254 +0.399 Sector 2 56.978 +0.197

Fawcett

Woods Racing

Last car on first group is Paul Fawcett driving Woods Racing Toyota. Woods Racing is down on 7th place on constructor's championship and big thanx goes to Tim Williams who drove two races for the teams and won both of them. Also Cris Goodley scored awesome 5 points from Monaco and Phil Perkins was 8th and scored one point from Germany making it 26 points in total for the team. Paul has completed the first sector and his time was 29.783 and he is 1.1 seconds off the pace and in same pace as Martin Buchan was. S2 for Fawcett is 58.3 and he is now one tenth quicker than Buchan was, can Fawcett take 4th place from Buchan? And the answer is? no, Fawcett goes to 5th place 1.9 seconds off the p1 time and 22 thousands of a second slower than Buchan, it was very close between those two the whole lap.

Fawcett Finish Line 5 Sector 1 29.783 +1.141

1:22.764 +1.909 Sector 2 58.317 +1.536

That was the first group of 5 cars, we will be right back after these short messages!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Group 2:

(Wagner, Nuti, Frueh, Lock, Sleight)

Wagner

Puma F1

Welcome back to follow Monza qualifying and Andreas Wagner is bout to start his flying lap. S1 for the Swiss driver is 28.7 and that's a good one as he is only 0.114 seconds slower than current leader Ryan was, but can he keep that pace up? S2 for Wagner is 57.2 and he looses 3 tenths to Ryan but is still in pretty good pace and looking for possible 3rd place at the moment if he makes it cleanly through Parabolica. Wagner crosses the line and he goes to 3rd. He lost nearly 4 tenths on final sector, 1:21.688 is 0.833 seconds slower than Ryan did but good for 3rd at the moment.

Wagner Finish Line 3 Sector 1 28.756 +0.114

1:21.688 +0.833 Sector 2 57.234 +0.453

Nuti

JTM

Nazario Nuti is behind the wheel of JTM Ferrari. There are plenty of Ferrari supporters out here to watch JTM and FinOz teams performance. Nuti stops the clocks at the S1 and he is only 18 thousands of a second slower than Ryan. Nuti looks to be pushing very hard. S2 for Nuti is very quick 56.521 seconds and is now 0.260 seconds in front of Ryan and looking to take the P1 from SCUM driver. Nuti goes over the line and he takes P1 by 0.4 seconds margin to Ryan. 1:20.446 is new poleposition time and I think that will last for quite long time now.

Nuti Finish Line 1 Sector 1 28.660 +0.018

1:20.446 -0.409 Sector 2 56.521 -0.260

Frueh

Puma F1

Wilhelm Frueh and 2nd of Puma's are next up. Teammate Andreas Wagner is currently on 4th place. Frueh scored Puma's first ever world champ points at Hungary but with the 3 points Frueh got from his 5th place team is still dead last on the constructor's champ standings but their main target was to get points and to renew their deal with Porsche for the next season. S1 for Frueh is pretty good as he is only 0.153 seconds slower than Nuti was. Teammate Wagner was even faster after S1 so it will be interesting to see can Frueh beat the Swiss driver. S2 for Frueh is better than Wagner did by 4 tenths and Frueh now trails the Nuti's time by 3 tenths flat. Through the Parabolica and over the line he goes and Frueh takes 3rd place being 6 tenths slower than Nuti and beating his teammate by 6 tenths.

Frueh Finish Line 3 Sector 1 28.813 +0.153

1:21.081 +0.635 Sector 2 56.821 +0.300

Lock

JTM

2nd JTM car and Toby Lock has just started the flying lap. Lock's teammate Nuti holds the p1 at the moment, can Lock make it 1-2 for JTM? S1 Lock isn't too promising as he is already 0.258 seconds slower than Nuti was. JTM and specially Lock has had a disappointing season so far. JTM is down on 8th place on constructor's champ and Lock is way down on drivers champ also, down in 14th place with 9 points and that's far from what Lock was hoping for I'm sure. S2 for the Brit is 57.3 and he is now 8 tenths off the pace and not going to make it 1-2 for JTM. Lock goes over the line and goes down to 5th place, 1:21.483 that's just over a second slower than team mate Nuti did. Maybe Lock was on heavier car as he lost the time steadily over the lap and didn't make any big mistakes? but only the team and driver knows that.

Lock Finish Line 5 Sector 1 28.918 +0.258

1:21.483 +1.037 Sector 2 57.344 +0.823

Sleight

MMC Racing

Last car on the 2nd group is MMC Racing driver Paul Sleight. If Lock's and JTM's season hasn't been the best one you can't say MMC Racing and Sleight having much better season either. Sleight was 2nd at Melbourne season opener and 2nd again at 4th race of the season at Imola. But after 13 races he has 24 points and he is on 6th place at the drivers champ. MMC Racing is in 5th place on constructor's champ, but already 33 points behind 4th placed Phoenix team so no much chances to move up on the standings. S1 for Sleight is very good as he is 0.131 seconds quicker than Nuti, maybe the things starts to go for the MMC Racing's favor at last! S2 for Sleight and he has lost his advantage over Nuti and trails now by 0.124 seconds, he is still in the hunt for the pole time if he goes cleanly through Parabolica. Sleight crosses the line and goes to 2nd place by 0.241 seconds slower than Nuti. After very good start for the lap a little disappointment at the line, but still pretty good lap for him.

Sleight Finish Line 2 Sector 1 28.529 -0.131

1:20.687 +0.241 Sector 2 56.645 +0.124

So that was the 2nd group and we will have another short break now!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Group 3:

(Tanskanen, Harding, Perkins, Mihailovic, Loram, Aparicio)

Welcome back to follow Monza qualifying. Nazario Nuti leads and Paul Sleight is currently on 2nd place. We still have 12 cars at the pitlane so it's still too early to say who will start from the pole for tomorrow's race.

Tanskanen

MMRT

Juha Tanskanen starts his flying lap. Juha is FinOz Racing test driver but have been loaned first to Mapes-VO to drive at Hungary and Belgium two weeks ago. Now he will drive for MMRT here at Monza our sources from the pitlane says we will see Juha behind the wheel on the rest of the season races, but for what team is still unsure. S1 for Tanskanen is 30.050 and he is nearly 1.4 seconds down on Nuti's pace and that's the slowest today. S2 for Tanskanen is 59.731 and he is over 3.2 seconds off the pace now and Juha wont be challenging for the front row positions with this lap. Tanskanen goes over the line and he goes last at the moment to 11th place, 3.6 seconds slower than Nuti was.

Tanskanen Finish Line 11 Sector 1 30.050 +1.390

1:24.092 +3.646 Sector 2 59.731 +3.210

Harding

SCUM

Peter Harding starts his flying lap on the 2nd of the SCUM cars. New teammate Kieran Ryan is currently on 3rd place at the moment. Only Nuti and Sleight have been quicker than Ryan. S1 for Harding is 29.6 and he is over 9 tenths of the pace so looks quite sure that Ryan will be the quicker of SCUM drivers today. S2 for Harding is 58.129 and he is just over 1.6 seconds off the pace. Harding hasn't score any points on this season and SCUM is far from keeping the 1 and 2 on their cars, or to be exact 0 and 2 on their cars after Shiro Ryong won the championship last year driving SCUM car. SCUM is currently on 6th place on the constructors champ. Meanwhile Harding goes over the line and he takes 9th place at the moment. Harding lap time is 1:22.5 and that's just over 2 seconds slower than Nuti and 1.7 seconds slower than teammate Ryan did.

Harding Finish Line 9 Sector 1 29.617 +0.957

1:22.500 +2.054 Sector 2 58.129 +1.608

Perkins

Woods Racing

Phil Perkins and 2nd of Woods Racing cars starts the flying lap. Phil's teammate Paul Fawcett if currently on 11th place, Fawcett's time was 1:22.764. S1 for Perkins is 29.6 that's nearly a 1 second off the Nuti's time but 1 tenth quicker than Fawcett did. S2 for Perkins is 58.3 and now is actually behind Fawcett's time only some thousands but still behind. This one will go down to the line with these two to sort out the faster Woods Racing driver today. Perkins crosses the line and he goes to 10th in front of Buchan and Fawcett. Perkins's time was 1:22.628 and that's nearly 2.2 seconds slower than Nuti did, but 0.136 seconds quicker than Fawcett did.

Perkins Finish Line 10 Sector 1 29.621 +0.961

1:22.628 +2.182 Sector 2 58.326 +1.805

Mihailovic

MMRT

Miodrag Mihailovic is next up. Mihailovic has new teammate this weekend Juha Tanskanen who we saw few moments ago to drive into 11th place, after that Juha has dropped few places and is currently on 13th place. S1 for Mihailovic is 29.540, that's nearly 9 tenths off the pace. Mihailovic has been once on the points and it was 3rd race of the season at Austria where he finished on 8th place. With that one single driver's champ point he is currently on joint 23rd place at the standings. S2 for Mihailovic is 58.186 and he is now 1.665 seconds off the Nuti's pace. If he can hold on to that pace he could go into top-10. Through the final long and challenging Parabolica corner and he crosses the line taking 9th place at the moment. 1:22.323 is nearly 1.9 seconds slower than P1 holder Nuti did but Mihailovic beats his teammate by 1.8 seconds.

Mihailovic Finish Line 9 Sector 1 29.540 +0.880

1:22.323 +1.877 Sector 2 58.186 +1.665

Loram

EIRE

Ross Loram will be next up. Team mate Martin Buchan is down on 11th place so Loram should be now the quicker of EIRE cars. Loram was left in the Whiteman's shadows this year but now with the Whiteman's absence Loram should be the number one in that team. S1 for Loram is 29.0 and that's already over 3 tenths slower than Nuti did but full 8 tenths quicker than Buchan was able. S2 for Loram is 57.443 and that's a full second quicker than Buchan did but already over 9 tenths slower than Nuti's time. Loram crosses the line and goes to 7th place. Loram's final time was 1:21.745 and that's 1.299 seconds off the P1 time but he beats his new teammate by a second.

Loram Finish Line 7 Sector 1 29.002 +0.342

1:21.745 +1.299 Sector 2 57.443 +0.922

Aparicio

Simsoa

Javier Aparicio will be our final driver on the 3rd group today. Aparicio will be also the first Simsoa car on track today and his teammate David Brown is waiting his turn 6th last. Aparicio hasn't scored any points yet. Teammate David Brown has 3 points but the team has 14 points as Kieran Ryan was driving on the team at Spain and Monaco. Meanwhile Aparicio completes the first sector and his time is 29.428 and with that he is 0.768 seconds off the pace so far. Back to Simsoa point, at Monaco Ryan started from pole position and finished the race in 2nd place earning 8 points for the team. At Spain Ryan was 6th and scored 3 points there. S2 for Aparicio is 57.862 and now he is over 1.3 seconds of the pace but it could be top-10 place for him at the moment. Aparicio crosses the line and goes to 10th. 1:22.027 is 1.581 seconds slower than Nuti did.

Aparicio Finish Line 10 Sector 1 29.428 +0.768

1:22.027 +1.581 Sector 2 57.862 +1.341

We will have our last commercial break now. Then we will have the hottest drivers to do their qualifying laps and you can almost feel the excitement build up here at Monza!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Group 4:

(Brown, McConkey, Koski, Irisarri, Jakonen, Elencevski)

Welcome back to Monza, we have 6 drivers still to do their qualifying runs. David Brown will start the final group with Ryan McConkey, Kari Koski, Antonio Irisarri, Mikko Jakonen and Steve Elencevski making the final starting grid for tomorrows Grand Prix of Italy.

Brown

Simsoa

Meanwhile David Brown starts his flying lap tomorrow's weather forecast predicts some chance of rain for the race and that could make the race very exciting if we will have some shower during the race. But today the weather is perfect and Brown is bout to complete the first sector right now. Brown's S1 time is 28.978 and that's only 0.318 seconds slower than Nuti did, Brown's time is over 4 tenths quicker than Aparicio did just before the break. Brown is on 19th place at driver champ standings with 3 points, he was 8th at European GP and 7th at Hungary. S2 for Brown is 57.3 and he is nearly 8 tenths off the Nuti's time now but beating his teammate by half a second. Brown goes over the line and he takes 7th place by lap time of 1:21.489 which is 1.043 seconds slower than current pole time set by Nazario Nuti.

Brown Finish Line 7 Sector 1 28.978 +0.318

1:21.489 +1.043 Sector 2 57.316 +0.795

McConkey

MMC Racing

Ryan McConkey dominated the winter tests before the season began but the season itself has been catastrophic for the American so far. Ryan is down on 15th place at the driver's championship standings and he has scored only 6 points so far and his season best finish is 6th place at European GP. S1 for McConkey here at Monza is very awesome 28.255 that is over 4 tenths quicker than Nuti did and clearly the fastest sector time we have seen so far. S2 for McConkey isn't that good 56.379, he is still in front but only by 0.142 seconds, can he hold on and steal the pole from Nuti? McConkey goes over the line and he takes P1 by 77 thousands of a second! He lost some time on final sector also, but 1:20.369 is now the pole time for the rest to beat.

McConkey Finish Line 1 Sector 1 28.255 -0.405

1:20.369 -0.077 Sector 2 56.379 -0.142

Koski

FinOz Racing

Where JTM and MMC Racing have had disappointing season FinOz Racing has had awesome debut season with Kari Koski and Steve Elencevski behind the wheel. Steve is currently on 2nd place on driver's champ standings and FinOz is also in 2nd place on constructor's standings. Steve has a fight in his hands with Mikko over the driver's title, but Mapes-VO looks to be too far in front for the team to catch. S1 for Koski is slow! 28.965 seconds and Kari is over 7 tenths off the pace already! Of course you have to remember McConkey just set awesome time to S1 but still Kari's time is slow and this is what's been the problem with FinOz this year. Steve has been on pole 3 times and his average qual position is 3.5 but Kari's pace has been quite far from his teammate although his best is 2nd place on qual, but average qual pos is 7.1 and same problem is seen with the race pace also. Steve has won 3 races and he has been 7 times on the podium where Kari's best is 5th place at the Austrian GP and Kari is down on 12th place on drivers standings with only 15 points compared to his teammate's 81 points, that's a huge difference! Meanwhile Kari is already at the Parabolica and his S2 time was 57.322 and he trails McConkey by over 9 tenths now. Koski crosses the line and goes down to 9th place, 1:21.725 and that's over 1.3 seconds slower than pole time, if he isn't driving on very heavy car that time is bad.

Koski Finish Line 9 Sector 1 28.965 +0.710

1:21.725 +1.356 Sector 2 57.322 +0.943

Irisarri

Phoenix F1

Antonio Irisarri driving on Phoenix F1 team is our 3rd last driver today. Irisarri hasn't been driving the full season but has been able to score 23 points so far and is in joined 7th place on the standings. S1 for Irisarri is 28.910 and he too is over 6 tenths off the pace early on the lap. Irisarri has made contract with the Phoenix F1 for the next season but the talks over the pitlane says Andy Graydon would loan Irisarri for some top team as race driver, but chances that we see Irisarri driving next year is quite good. S2 for Irisarri is 57.252 and that's 0.873 seconds slower than McConkey did. Now into final long Parabolica corner and Irisarri completes he lap in time of off 1:21.253 and he goes to 6th place after being nearly 9 tenths slower then McConkey.

Irisarri Finish Line 6 Sector 1 28.910 +0.655

1:21.253 +0.884 Sector 2 57.252 +0.873

Jakonen

Mapes-VO

2 to go and not just some 2, every session now can be deceive between Jakonen and Elencevski. Mikko has won 3 races this season but he has been 11 times on the podium meaning he hasn't been on the podium in two occasions he was 7th at British GP and 4th at Belgium 2 weeks ago. S1 for Jakonen is 28.694 and he is over 4 tenths off McConkey's sector time! Looks like Ryan really set very competitive time on first sector. S2 for Jakonen and he picks up the pace and closes the gap to 0.357 seconds but it will be very hard to get to the front row from there. Jakonen goes through the Parabolica and crosses the line and goes to 5th! 1:20.908 and he looses over half a second to McConkey and now it's sure the MMC driver starts from the front row of the grid but will it be p1 or p2? one man to go.

Jakonen Finish Line 5 Sector 1 28.694 +0.439

1:20.908 +0.539 Sector 2 56.736 +0.357

Elencevski

FinOz Racing

Last driver today is Steve Elencevski. Steve has won the last two races, first at Hungary and 2 weeks ago at Belgium where he stormed through the field from 9th place on the grid and took comfortable win closing the gap down to 14 points to Jakonen on driver champ standings. S1 for Elencevski and he is almost even with Jakonen, but that means he is over 4 tenths off McConkey's time! So I would say now Ryan will be in pole for tomorrow's race and Nuti might hang on the 2nd place on the grid. S2 for Elencevski is 56.639, he closes the gap down to 0.260 seconds but that is still too much to make over the Parabolica corner, but can Steve beat Ryan and Jakonen and be on 2nd row on the grid? Elencevski crosses the line and goes to 3rd! 1:20.661 and he looses out to McConkey by 0.292 seconds. It's celebrations at MMC and JTM garages and rather interesting starting grid for tomorrow's race. Stay tuned for some high octane action more at tomorrow's race!

Elencevski Finish Line 3 Sector 1 28.680 +0.425

1:20.661 +0.292 Sector 2 56.639 +0.260

Summary

Ryan McConkey will start from poleposition for the Italian GP after beating Nazario Nuti by 77 thousands of a second. Pole was 2nd in a row for the American. Steve Elencevski is chasing hard Mikko Jakonen for driver championship title and we will be the 3rd place on the grid where Jakonen was left to 6th place. Weather can throw some extra spices to the race as there was some forecast saying in might rain in some point of the race.
