The Renault 'top brass' were seen in force at the French Grand Prix to watch the Phoenix F1 team in operation. It is no secret that the Renault engine deal is due for renewal at the end of 2004, although it is believed that a 2005 deal is at the first option of the British team - dependant on where they finish in the Constructors Championship.

But clearly Renault want to see their engine performing well in the top formula that is the F1VWC as soon as possible. And what better place to do that than the French Grand Prix.

Irisarri looked unusually slow in the 2nd and third sectors of the track where he gained Pole in the wet in 2003, and his overall Qualifying position of 13th was not what was expected. However, it has yet to be seen what strategy he has used and whether or not this position reflects a time penalty due to a heavy fuel load.

On the other hand, Daniel Wilkinson qualified 7th - his best of the 2004 season. And that despite limited free practice time due to various technical issues with his car. It was clear from the reaction on the pit wall from the team that they were pleased with 7th on the grid.

We caught up with the returning Australian star after the session finished as he was walking back to the team motorhome for a strategy de-brief:-

How was your lap Daniel?

"The first chicane (after Adelaide) is tricky and cost me time and the last sequence of corners at the pit entry are causing me concern. Just got to keep my head together for the race and we should be OK!"

Best qualifying of the year for you. With the Renault top brass in the Paddock, can you perform well in the race and give the team a boost?

"There's a lot more speed in this setup and I believe I can go much faster in the race. We're expecting the Michelins to hold up well with this setup so I should be able to push for consistently fast times all race."

Your boss believes that the Phoenix F1 team can still challenge EIRE for third in the Constructors. What are your aims for the remaining 3 races in order to help achieve that goal?

"Quite simply to win! Do that and we'll have 3rd."

And with that he disappeared behind the security cordon. What is clear was that there is definitely an 'edge' here in the Phoenix F1 camp for this race. It has probably come about after the huge disappointment of Monza, but can also be linked with Irisarri expecting to announce a race seat at another team in 2005 quite soon. Plus the continuing major rumour that Wilkinson is quitting the sport completely after the last race in Brazil.

It would appear that it is not just the team who want to gain their first ever win, but it could be the last chance for the likes of Irisarri (in a Phoenix F1) and Wilkinson (impending retirement) to go out of the team on a high note.

We'll see what the outcome is on race day, no doubt.
