Lee Morris overcame a grip-penalty to climb from 7th on the grid to win the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The Draig Racing driver made the best out of a 2-stop strategy to dispatch opposition and leapfrog pole sitter Joe Consiglio who, despite some intense last-stint pressure, had to settle for second to finally put some points on the scoreboard.

Qualifying saw Consiglio snatch another pole position from Morris, making the best of a lighter car to maximise his chances in the race. With Morris demoted to 7th (together with Ojay Clark, who went from 5th to 10th), Sam Millar lined up next to the Nordsjoen driver in row one, with Jason Muscat and David Jundt locking up row two for Red Archer. The Woods pair of Mark Wicks and Kieran Ryan had another session to forget, with just the 13th and 17th times to show for their efforts.

All cars took off cleanly at the start, but the hairpin at lap 1 saw a few shunts as Ryan Walker spun, setting off a concertina effect that saw Gavin Thomas punt William Ponissi in the path of Ben Morgan, the Swansea driver sent in a roll. Morris was quick to dispatch most of his opponents and, while at the back furious fights erupted, the leaders had a pretty smooth race.

On a race with a very low attrition race - 17 drivers out of 23 made it to the end - the calculations turned to strategy. With Consiglio on a three stopper and Morris planning to visit his pitcrew only twice, different mentalities were at odds. Lee Morris came out on top of this particular battle, emerging from the last round of stops 5 seconds ahead of Consiglio. The Maltese driver could only bring down his gap to half a second but, for the second year in a row after stifling Mark Wicks's attacks in 2010, it was Lee Morris who crossed the line first to bring his Championship tally to 30 points - 14 more than his closest rival, David Jundt.
