The first in-season test of 2011 showed how important Research & Development is in the GPVWC Superleague. After a three-race long domination by Draig Racing and Nordsjoen Racing, the first significant improvements brought in by most teams over the 2-week break mean that we might be seeing a very different situation in China, where the 4th Round of the Championship will be held next Thursday.

Lee Morris on Draig was the fastest man on the track, completing more than a hundred laps. The gap with his rivals, however, is reducing: with Nordsjoen Racing surprisingly absent from the test, the closest rivals tonight were Jason Muscat and Ojay Clark, just little more than half a second off the pace of Morris, with an excellent Dave Carr-Smith in fourth.

Midnight Motorsport showed a great improvement during the test, having received, according to sources close to the team, an important set of improvements in the days after the Suzuka Grand Prix. The English team is the first to show, during the 2011 season, how a well-timed improvement can bring a new lease of life into a car - and with drivers like Carr-Smith and Nick Rowland at the wheel, the 0.4-0.5 seconds the improvements are rumoured to bring could mean a role as protagonists, rather than sideshows, in the central and final part of the season.

The planning and execution of a R&D strategy will be one of the key aspect of the season. With some of the teams - even at the top end of the rankings - rumoured to be in financial difficulties, the ability to deploy extra improvements to a vehicle and invest massively in testing sessions and research could tip the balance of the Championship battle one way or the other - making this season even more compelling than it already is.

With a top-end team rumoured to be about to receive a huge improvement in the run-up of the South African GP, and the whole midfield pack busy working on new devices and wing profiles, it is not hard to imagine the excitement the next few races will bring.
