2012 will be Constant Racing’s 4th year in the GPVWC and will mark the beginning of an inter-team sibling rivalry that will hopefully bring success to the St Helens based squad.

As expected Mark Stanton will be piloting the number 16 car. The major change in the team’s line up sees William Ponissi stepping down from his position as 2nd driver and taking up lead test/reserve driver role, as Stanton explains:

“Will has been a great member of the team since Montreal in 2009 when I first offered him the seat. He has competed in over 30 races for us but, due to outside commitments, chose to step down for 2012. We discussed it in length, but he ultimately chose to settle in the test seat which left the 2nd race seat open for our new signing”.

In probably the least surprising signing of the year, Mark will be joined by his older brother David Stanton, who moves to Constant from ST Racing. Of course David has raced for Constant in other categories but now gets his big chance to represent the team in GPVWC’s top tier championship. At the announcement David was clearly excited at the prospect:

“Firstly I would like to thank Mark and Joe for giving me this opportunity to race for Constant Racing. It has been discussed/argued between Mark and myself since I entered the championship back in 2010 with Nordsjoen which one of us would be the fastest in the same car and next season we should be able to settle this discussion. Being serious though, now that this announcement has been made I cannot wait to get more involved with the team and for the season to start. From visiting the factory and seeing how much work and effort is going into next seasons car I believe that next season should allow Constant Racing to challenge for good points in every race and hopefully for podiums allowing the team to get back up the constructors table.”

Half way through the 2011 season Constant realised that due to technical issues, commitment clashes and general bad luck, the season would be mostly about damage limitation. This led co-owners Joe Consiglio and Mark Stanton to make the decision to cease development on the CR-SL11 chassis from San Marino onwards and to focus on 2012 preparations. Consiglio explains the situation:

“As a team we know we underperformed a bit last year. We went the wrong way with our development programme and it cost us really. In the end 9th in the championship was pretty disappointing but we’re doing everything we can to make sure the same thing doesn’t happen this year. It’s been well documented that we switched our focus to the 2012 car early and hopefully this approach will pay off for us.”

When asked about the new driver line-up Consiglio was very positive on the new pairing:

“I know for a fact Mark and David will push each very hard. For the team it’s a win win situation because they have very similar pace and if one of them is having a difficult race the other will be there to pick up the pieces. Aside from their rivalry though one of the great things about Mark and David is that they work so well together, they want to beat each other, sure, but they also want to see each other do well. I’m sure this combination of cooperation and competition will drive the team up the grid.”
