Report

Bart De Vos won the season-opening Australian Grand Prix to claim the first honours in the 2011 GPVWC Supercup. The Belgian driver fended off the attacks of his opponents to clinch an important win after putting in an impressive qualifying lap, leaving David Jundt and Sam Millar more than a second off his pole time.

Despite starting on the clean side of the track, the Belgian was overtaken by Millar by turn one, and had to engage the Williamson Dynamics driver right away to avoid the Scot making the most of the free track. Behind them, a catastrophic start saw Jundt stall his car on the grid, lose five positions by turn one and then spin and collide with Samuli Leinonen - leaving nothing but an early retirement for the Swiss driver.

Millar had to defend at every corner for a few good laps as debutant De Vos piled the pressure on the experienced Supercup race winner. However, soon after De Vos managed to find a way through and Millar, trying to keep contact, spun and hit the wall, forcing himself to stop for repairs. The Scot would later retire.

Besides a minor scare, when De Vos himself had to pit (conveniently, in his in-lap) for a new wing, nothing could spoil the day for the Malta Force GP driver, who went on to clinch his, and his team's, maiden victory. Behind him, Triple-Double Racing's Pavel Loknovski got 2nd and Leinonen 3rd - the only two other drivers to finish in the lead lap. Gavin Thomas set a creditable fourth position after a late fight with Gregg Lawson, while Georgios Davakos, Ben Morgan, Chris Williamson, Dan Rusu and Paul McKenna were the last point finishers.
